Attacking Question

Okay, my friend and I were playing MTG. He had a card that when he attacks, it automatically does 1 extra damage. It was a 1/1 creature. I put a -1/-0 counter on his card, making it a 0/1 card. We want to know if he could still attack. I said he couldn't, using common sense, because he had no attack. But he said he could, it just wouldn't do attack damage to me or anything. Can someone clear this up for us please?O

He can still attack. A creature with 0 power would just assign no damage.
