I'm looking at building my first commander deck but am completely new to the format...mainly looking for a good place to start but any other tips will be appreciated as well. The colors I'm looking at running are but aren't limited to: bwg, bgr, bru, or brw

Thanks for all input :)

Do you prefer Aggro, combo, control, or tempo?

Aggro is usually bad in EDH. My Animar deck is called a swarm deck. It takes over the battlefield incredible fast then kills them with commander damage

What I usually do when building a new EDH deck is search for all legendary creatures that match my color scheme(s). One of them should call out to you...Decide how you want to play your deck and start filling it out. Make sure to search for staple EDH cards for those colors, too! More than likely someone has already made a deck using your chosen commander - search for those and see if you can pick out any combos to add to your deck!

Not sure if this helps, but every deck I build in standard...regardless of how it starts...always ends up being midrange...not sure how that would transfer over to edh :/ I am building this for casual play so I don't want anything to over powered (i.e. {kaalia}) but I would prefer to win (who doesn't lol) just want to make sure it's fun to play but also fun to play against

Make a Chaos deck!!!!

You should take a look at {Ghave, Guru of Spores} and {Karadore, Ghost Cheiftain}. Those two are great midrange commanders and can generate a whole lot of value! Welcome to EDH! :)

I'm with Dylan here. I'd say look at your playstyle first. What would you like to accomplish with your deck? Voltron? Combo? Aggro? Control? From there it's pretty easy to pick a commander, and hence your colors

{Karadore, Ghost Cheiftain} looks fun :) but is its cmc to high? I know nothing bout cmc in edh :/

Usually "High CMC" doesn't matter in EDH

I mean if you have a bunch of creature cards in your graveyard it certainly isn't too high lol. In EDH games are kinda centered around late game, and most EDH decks focus their early game on that. So lots of ramp. In other words, cmc shouldn't be high on your priority list when looking at cards. Of course, still consider it and watch your curve, but don't be too focused on it.

Make 2 decks:

One your preferred playstyle

One to be a jerk and lockdown: ie shatterbang bros.

Sac sac sac.

When I first started playing EDH, I literally just went through my collection, found a Legend and random stuff to go with it.  I basically use this to start any of my new decks, too.  Based on what I find, I'll usually settle on a play style or theme for the deck, then build, buy, change, trade, etc. until I feel like the deck is really solid.

Also, you don't have to settle for one play style.  I currently have, what...  Five or six different decks built and ready to go, and no two do the same thing.  EDH is about personalization.  Just have fun with it.
