Can someone explain why most of the decks that people share use play sets of cards as opposed to running one or two copies to add more variety?

ApexPredator

More copies of a card gives you a better chance to draw the card and allows for consistency.

Pi

That is what I thought. I like how edh breaks up all those combos by only allowing one copy of a card. I have a small budget and buying one card to fix a deck is easier on me than buying four.

I can tell you right now. EDH (in most cases) is more expensive then most everything else. Except vintage and legacy.

And I mean competitive. Or good EDH.

Pi

Then I will stick my my noncompetitive way of life, where I am not as broke. Until February 7th

Playing casually edh is much more appealing as the same deck can play a different game every time it's shuffled and improving is a slow and steady process that can mold to fit you budget and trade ability. In any constructed format however (60 card decks) consistancy is key, having a deck means you are representing a strategy and not giving it all the tools to properly do that is not fair to the deck or it's pilot. If you want a budget way to approach standard just save for prerelease events, the prize support is highest at these events and it is your chance to trade the most in your favor to complete whatever you want to play. Reason being people feel rushed to get the cards they want despite them being at an inflated release price. Two set releases in and most people end up well enough off to win some credit to pay for improvements.

Im not sure if you wanted any of this but it seemed like a decent place to get this info out to the forum.

P.s. edh i did not include as a "constructed" format since it is not a sanctioned format.

Actually, if you plus the same comment, it'll let you do that, because you are "undoing" whatever you did.

Thanks bud. +1 for teaching me stufz

Kaleo, you keep saying EDH is not sanctioned. It's been in many FNM's that I've been to. Those are sanctioned.

EDH itself is not sanctioned. At any events they may play it under "casual" multiplayer and allow you to earn pw points. So it can be "sanctioned" while actually not really being so.
