Hi everyone, I just started a cmdr league at my high school (I'm a sr it's three of my sr friends and about 4 freshman), sadly most haven't p,ayes magic but they love the idea of a casual format, beside the ban list we added only two cards to the ban list. Iona and zur. My question for you guys is, do you have any recommendations for them when it comes to deck or rules or anything for me to change or cards to ban. (Oh and poison was bounced up to 20)

xStrayKnightx

I'd say don't add any cards to the banned list. If you guys swear not to use {Iona, Shield of Emeria} inside your own league, you'd be screwed if you came across it in a game outside of the league.

As for rules, just stick to the rules pertaining to the formats you're playing.

I agree. Banning those cards will never help you guys learn how to beat them :p

(P.s {Torpor Orb} ;))

Maybe it should have some additional name? There are some things that really need to be banned... Maybe no infinite combos as a rule?

xStrayKnightx

Or win-cons, ie: {Hellkite Tyrant}.

Or ridiculously OP'ed Planeswalkers, like {Jace, the Mind Sculptor} or {Gideon, Champion of Justice}.

Iona's casting cost is so high, with the versatility of EDH you should be able to find an answer for her by turn 8 or 9. I can understand the frustration of potentially seeing her on turn 4 with a Kaalia of the vast deck, but even then, she can only stop you from using one color, shouldn't be too hard to work around in a three color EDH deck.

If you run into those kind of problems, try running some colorless spells/artifacts. {All is dust} is a staple. If you're hitting all the wrong lands, at least you know you can reset the battlefield a few turns down the road.

Shadridium

Basically the main reason she is banned is because I have that one guy in the group that does go for turn four with kalia (very annoying) and almost everyone that's new is running mono colored

Shadridium

I plan to allow her later just not for the new players when most just learned the rules of the game a few days ago.

Encourage multicolored commander. Mono colored commander is incredibly hard for a beginer.  I guess not so much vs other mono beginers. But vs kallia.. even a moderate player would roll face.

Have you considered just making casual for fun decks. commander may be casual but to me, if some people are more competitive than others, its going to be the more advanced players win all the time. Maybe build a type 4 cube. Or try a limited format.

Shadridium

I'll look into it, everyone in the group likes commander there is just one player who just doesn't want to be beaten.

Worst. Suggestion. Ever. :P

If your problem is just your one friend being too competitive, tell him to chill and have fun. Or conspire with your other friends to screw him over before you start going after each other :P

See how long it takes him to get the message when all 7 of you start using {Declaration of Naught} and {Nevermore} naming Kaalia in every one of your decks. He'll catch on that putting a target on himself with overcompetativeness isn't going to spoil your fun, it'll spoil his.

Yo! Gorzo's got some good advice there. Banning cards isn't the answer! That's the BEAUTY of EDH--you don't have to ban anything, because it's a multiplayer format, where .politics. happen! Just conspire against anyone running the broken cards. You and your buds will prevail if you use teamwork!

Also, if you must ban something, ban unfair cards. Iona is, in my humble opinion, a fair card. It has a high cmc and in a multiplayer game, you can usually only shut down one person (at best) by resolving it. Unfair cards are things like {Mana Crypt}, {Mana Vault}, and {Sol Ring}. Cards that let you skip at least two turns ahead of everyone else! And whoever draws one in their opener has a much better chance of winning. I am willing to bet that if your friend is competitive, he has probably pulled a turn one land - {Sol Ring} - {Boros Signet} before.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck with your EDH leauge!

Thanks guys, ill will for sure talk to the guys about unbanning the banned list, you all made very solid points. Thank you everyone.
