Is there any other way to activate his ability other then paying the mana cost

not that I could think of but you could reduce the cost with  {Training Grounds} or  {Heartstone}

If he dies from a source other than the activation of his ability, then there is no ability to resolve in the first place.

It may be of interest that  {Dying Wish} essentially does the same (and more) as his ability and can be placed on any creature without protection.
It may be of double interest to know that if you attach it to a Hellhole Flailer and then activate his ability, the Dying Wish will activate as well for double the damage
