Aside from  {Force of Will}, what is considered the best counter spells in EDH?

Aladormax

Actually  {Force of Will} sucks because of card disadvantage and life loss. It is only overpriced because of legacy.

Rpbarber

So what do you consider the best counter spell then?

Gorzo

It depends on your meta. If your group plays "fast" EDH, you won't be able to use the the huge, game-changing counterspells as easily. If the meta is slower, and you can foreseeably use 6 mana for a counterspell, {Gather Specimens}, {Counterlash}, and {Spell Burst} are some favorites.

However, less mana is always better. {Spell Crumple} and {Hinder} are EDH staples for counterspells, as they can tuck a commander to the bottom of a library. {Forbid} is popular due to buyback. {Counterspell} is always good due to its simplicity and mana efficiency. EDH tends to be creature heavy, so if your meta is too, {Essence Scatter} becomes very useful.

There are so many options, really. Pick counterspells that you like!

Normally the meta is slow but you always have that one guy that spends every dime he has in magic so he always has the expensive cards like  {Mana Drain}. I like  {Counterspell} and  {Spell Crumple}. Just wondering what other options there were.

{Dissipate} is pretty good. Not so much against the commander itself, but some things are too dangerous in the GY. Answer = {dissipate}

I like cards that are more than just a counter, like  {Punish Ignorance},  {Hindering Light},  {Glen Elendra Archmage},  {Render Silent}.

In EDH  {Cryptic Command} is always helpful, but it really depends on what you intend to use the counter for?

Protect your commander...

Bury their commander...

Ward off troublesome combos...

Once you know the main function, then deciding on a helpful counter is much easier.

To reiterate Gorzo's point: {Hinder} and {Spell Crumple} rule in the format. Also, {Misdirection} and {Desertion} are also great counters.

Agrajagzz9

 {Plasm Capture} and  {Desertion} and mana drain are also amazing

Rpbarber

Thanks everyone for the help. Still don't know which ones I'm going to choose but I definitely have more options than I thought I did.

 {Mystic Snake},  {Mystic Genesis}, {Venser, Shaper Savant}, {Draining Whelk}, {Decree of Silence}, {Dovescape}, {Voidmage Husher}, and {Azorius Guildmage}.

Edit: {Mindbreak Trap}, {Remand}, {Delay}, {Memory Lapse}, {Ertai's Meddling}, {Mana Leak}, {Power Leak}, and {Power Sink}.

Arzair

  {Spelljack}. = Amazing!

{Pact of Negation} = I need my combo to go through at all costs, and i don't need to worry about the upkeep cost because I will win before it triggers.

Also some thought should be given to making your spells un-counterable.... So things like  {Boseiju, Who Shelters All}, or  {Vexing Shusher}, because an un counterable counter is awesome.

 {Isochron Scepter}
+ any 2 drop counter :)
