Master of cruelties double strike

Say I have a  {Master of Cruelties}  and he is beefed up to 4/7. If I play armed making him a 5/8 with double strike and they block with something that would die in the first damage step. Would the second strike take them to 1 or is he still technically blocked?

If he doesn't have trample, the damage will not go through. A blocked creature does not deal damage to the defending player (excluding trample).

If a creature is blocked in combat, it remains blocked for the remainder of combat, even if the blocking creature is removed from combat. Your Master of Cruelties will still be considered blocked even though the creature that blocked it was killed by the first strike damage. So Master of Cruelties won't put your opponent to 1 through it's ability in this instance.

Would that even work? Because once he attacks and isn't blocked he assigns no combat damage.

Giving him double strike won't make a difference if they don't block it, as both damage steps are in the same combat

Would suck to only have  {Master of Cruelties} to do damage he could never finish off the opponent
