Mana pool question

When a card says to add a certain mana to your mana pool is that affect permanent or do you only get that extra mana for that turn. For example  {Dark Ritual}

Your mana pool empties at the end of each phase.  So if you play {Dark Ritual} during your main phase, you have to use that mana during your main phase or you lose it.

500.4. When a step or phase ends, any unused mana left in a player's mana pool empties. This turnbased action doesn't use the stack. - for reference
