In the PC world, when I wanted upgrade I had to swap the motherboard anyway for the bandwidth, so it forced upgrade of the whole system really. Turned out that the only semi-stable thing in the 'upgradeable' PC rig was bare tower without PSU.

Yeah, I know that issue too.
Had oldskool MB, couldn't upgrade RAM or processor.
More recently, I got a new videocard, MoBo & RAM. installed. PC didn't do anything anymore. Turned out my power outlet didn't have enough Wattage to support it.
Since the outlet was fixed in the case, I ended up with a whole new case.
But, PC is still more upgradable then say a PS4.

When I first built my of, I bought a larger PCU and MOBO than I needed, so that when I upgraded my video card to the 980, and processor to i7, it would support it.

Its not about graphics, it's about aesthetics. You can have amazing HD graphics and a all-gray colour pallet and it'll look like crap.

Console gaming is in all but two objective ways inferior to PC gaming, and those two ways are playing with friends IRL and price of machine. That's not to say console gaming is bad, i still enjoy it and I don't much care what I use most of the time.

Graphics CAN break a game, but not make a game. If I've got a photorealistic racer, with cars that feel like wet towels, it will be a poor race game.
