My faith in humanity can only be restored if the majority of people on this forum get this answer right:
40+40x0+1
Is the answer 41 or 1???

Ima keep a tally here:
Right: 3
Wrong: 1
27: {MisterJH}

Birdbrain

1 of course. 40*0 equals 0

41.  40x0 goes first.  Then you add the first 40 to the zero, then add the 1.  PEMDAS!!!

Beat me to it Keyeto :P

I meant 80 :p. and sense when does it go from right to left?
PEMDAS
Parenthesis
Exponent
Multiply/Divide (in order of left to right)
then Add/Subtract (in order of left to right)

Birdbrain

I thought it went left to right. And I meant 80 :p

Edit: I don't see any parentheses

41. If you do it in correct order, it would be read like this: 40 + (40 x 0) + 1. This would simplify to 40 + 0 + 1, which is 41.

PEMDAS is order of operations.  There doesn't have to be any parenthesis.  It's like an If:Then kinda deal.  IF there is a parenthesis, THEN figure that first.  Then, IF there is an exponent, THEN figure that next.  And so on.  And PEMDAS is just Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.

But I don't see any parentheses In the original problem

But I don't see any parentheses
Multiplication and Division come before Add and subtract

The parenthesis above are just used to make a point.

PEMDAS. Multiplication and division after Parentheses and Exponents, and there are none, so multiplication first.

ANYWAYS.. I just wanted to post this here because there was something on FB... "Like if the answer is 1, comment of 41"
There were 38.6 THOUSAND likes...and 2000 comments, 1/4 of which were people arguing the wrong answer...
