"Inheriting" Old Cards

I got into contact with my dad's roommate from college, whom I know has played Magic since Alpha. He no longer plays- he said he missed the strategy of it but it was time to move on. He is mailing me his vast collection of cards- I have no idea what to expect but I know from when I was little that his collection is huge.
What should I expect from a collection like this? Speculation? Thoughts? I'll let everyone know what I get.

I wouldn't expect anything over 50 dollar cards. I think that if he was really a good player, he would have known he could sell the money cards.

I would agree but he has never played anything but kitchen table magic. He thought I wouldn't want all of his old cards because they were old

He probably traded away his big money cards way back when, like I did before I knew what anything was worth. However, he will probably have some cool stuff that wasn't worth much back in the day but is valuable now.

He just dropped off the cards. A huge shopping bag full of them. I've only gone through 2 boxes, but I have found some great cards like  {Bayou} and {Bloodstained Mire}!
