If it helps you understand, fear was black intimidate before intimidate was a keyword. Then after shards they realized "hey, stuff other than black is using fear now. Let's make it a new keyword that corresponds to its own color rather than always black, and call it intimidate."

I think that MaRo and others also didn't like the vibe that fear had. What does it mean for a creature to "have fear", to "gain fear"?  It sounds like the creature is the one that's afraid, not instilling fear in others. So they came up with something all colors could use that sounded better.
