Trading, if you don't mind waiting and patience, as well as skill. You could go from a booster pack to a {Mox Sapphire} if you're really good.

What if I don't know many people who I can trade with?

Buy a "playset of commons and uncommons" for like $32. It'll save you hundreds over having to buy them later. After you have all the commons and uncommons, playsets of rares could cost you $29 for the set? It's already infinity cheaper then buying a $100 box and expecting to get a playset of rares from it

Yes^^ get a playset of com. Uncom. And then invest in a playset of rares

Where would one do this for the commons/uncommons?

Also, check eBay for playsets of rares, if you have a specific rare you need, that isn't a planeswalker, then eBay gets pretty cheap sometimes.

eBay. I already preordered my Return to Ravnica Common and Uncommon playset for $32.99 shipped.

Then that way, the rares I really want I'll buy a them and still be below the cost of buying a booster box, which doesn't guarentee you a playset of any rares.

But for the record, I preordered 2 booster boxes and 2 fat packs to go along with my C/UC x4.
