I am still learning the nuances of this game so I am glad this particular combo came up. I had thought deathtouch only worked with combat damage, not with activated abilities. So do abilities like lifelink and deathtouch actually work outside of combat?

You got it!  There are some abilities that only work in combat: Trample, first strike, and double strike to name a few.

Ya it works. I had this ccombo in a {Bazaar Trader} deck. Which was fun by the way everything is dead or mine. Lol  {Bazaar Trader} + { Act of Treason} and about 2 other cards with the same effect as act and you've got my trader deck.
