Nicol bolas

If my buddy has no land to blow up do I still have to blow my land to get {nicol bolas, planswalker} +3. Just checking I think yes cause it's not may.

You can destroy anything that's not a creature so if he has something or you want something of yours dead then by all means destroy it, but if he has nothing then to get the +3 you have to blast something

Just blow up your lands till you ultimate bolas then proceed to win 

If your buddy has no lands or other non-creature permanents and you have enough to had cast {Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker}, I think you can afford to lose a land. Or if he has nothing because of something like a {worldgorger dragon}, you can just -2 to take it and leave him with zip.
