I heat about people who have fun making home brews, decks they come up with using cards they have. I want to try my hand at making one with a box full of cards I have but don't know where to start. Do I go into it having a plan what I kinda of want, just throw stuff together, or pick a few cards and build around them?

I always go in with a plan. Usually I pull a card or two from a booster that I wanna use in a deck. Then go from there.

I have about 400 cards, mostly commons and uncommons. I know I'm not making a deck to compete or anything, I just want better practice and putting decks together. I run GW so Iwant to give RB or UB a try

Great question, starting homebrews is no simple task without some mentorship or directive. Good home brews require a certain skill set; mana ratioing, an ability to spot new interactions, seeing the value in every card no matter how seemingly pointless, good knowlege of whats available to you, and enough dedication to see something through even if others say it's stupid. If youve seen the lists ive posted you probably know i specialize in homebrews regardless of the budget available. I didnt start out like that obviously, i began with some of those traits and grew the others through mentorship and practice.

Here's where i recommend you start. Decide how you want to win, and then find cards that get you closer to that goal. Once youre that far find what i call insurance, cards that will protect your goal, yourself, or give you a second option to win with. At this point youll probably have 60-100 cards in front of you (in a list or for real). From these cards you trim down the fluff and get a solid deck as well as form your side board. Once thats done we'll help you with mana ratioing if you ask.

If that doesnt work for you, then look through your cards and find a card or effect you like and follow the same steps but this time your focus is strengthing that idea you found instead of really focusing on your end game strategy.

You can use this app to help you build many decks and post them here for help. Besides, building here you can use whichever cards you want. Another great way to improve is to test them on Cockatrice (search for it on this forum)

I pick a card I like and then make a deck around it.
Something like {Dread Slaver} or {Slumbering Dragon}
