That is still a lot of mana to spend.  You are talking 3 mana in two turns.......if you have 6 mana to cast it and use it then chances are you don't need lands anyway.

For a grixis control to turn four pull out 3 dual lands lets you minimize your land count in a deck and even fourther reduces the chance of not getting the correct mana for ypur lategame

I wouldn't want to pull 3 shock lands. You would pull the basics you'd need. Do you want to spend turn 3 casting the artifact, turn4 fetching them...then pay 2 life to use each as soon as they come into play? Nope!

The effect puts the mana into your hand. It's the same reason I don't like the new {Liliana ,of the Dark Realm}. I want my lands to be put into the battlefield. I'm using a card to gain a card...not lose a turn.

{Gem of Becoming} is one of those cards that isn't going to be useful when you need it, and can clog your hand when you don't.

I'm thinking of putting together a mono-{B} grixis deck.  All of the lands are {Swamp}s for {Cabal Coffers}, Lily, {Corrupt}, but then having access to {R} and {U} for control and other stuff.  Guess it depends on how many {Watery Grave}s and {Blood Crypt}s I can scare up.

and many would disagree. shock lands being in standard will shake up the metagame and modern is in a desperate shortage of them.

If they don't, they can't have the same names because they'll be functionally different.  Different names = different cards, and so they won't be reprinting them. 

But MaRo effectively said "Shock-lands" with return in RtR.  Someone has the exact quote.

Basic-landtype dualies were heralded by {Farseek} (otherwise, it's strictly worse than {Rampant Growth}), {Arbor Elf}, and the {Kird Ape} crew: {Prized Elephant}, {Arctic Aven}, {Harbor Bandit}, {Crimson Muckwader}, and {Flinthoof Boar}.

tl;dr it'd be a serious douche-maneuver if they didn't reprint shock-lands.
