Pretty much you choose a color say red and if a red spell or anything red deals you damage you can tap 1 mana to have an opponent lose a life and you gain one haha

BadLuckIrish

u still get hit with the spell or creature though

Kareason

The old CoP spells {Circle of Protection:Black} allow you to ignore all the damage from one source for 1 colorless. Example: You have a CoP:R out, I cast {Thunderbolt} on you. You can tap 1 mana to prevent the damage.

These were White enchantments that came in each color, artifact and I do believe at one point even a CoP:Land.
