When the eldrazi expansion was out, did people actually play standard with them?

Ive seen 10-14 mana for 1 dude. Seems unlikely that they got played. So why is their value so high?

No one hard castes them, they used stuff like {quicksilver amulet}

I have a mono green elfdrazi deck that ramps into them. It's nuts when it happens

Infect will never really go away. Hell, I have some really old cards that gave poison counters.

11-15 mana isn't that hard when you use mana dorks, {Eldrazi Temple}, and {Garruk Wildspeaker}.
