Ajani emblem

situation: EDH
I have {ajani steadfast} in play and I use his emblem.  Now all damage dealt to me / planes walker I control is reduced to 1. 

Ok, so if my opponent had {child of alara} as their commander and had dealt 16 damage to me before I got the emblem out, if they swung with alara for 6, would the total commander damage dealt by alara be raised by 6 or by 1?

If that was confusing, ask and I will further explain myself

It only ever deals 1. It swings in for X, and it is reduced to 1 before any damage is dealt.
