I was looking into this game format and was curious if anyone's tried it and if so? How was it? I'm a little confused on a couple of the intricate parts such as sphere of influence? But I wanna try it with some friends cuz it seems really awesome. So, thoughts?
To my understanding the game takes 6 players
2 emperors sitting between their 2 generals and generals can only attack generals and emperors can only target their generals til a general dies in which players may now target the emperor. And the goal of the game is to defeat the other teams emperor? I'm not sure which format of deck is legal I'm guessing it has it's own unless it's not that official. (If I got any of this wrong please correct me) Thanks all! It seems awesome for multiplayer and I could see it being crazy with EDH decks.

I just taught this to some kids at the card shop
And then judged over it
Was fun
I've never heard of this before? Can someone explain it? This sounds über fun :))

Theres definitely no official banlist or anything, though its normally played with edh decks. Basically teams of three with a sphere of influence of two. So each spells will only reach two players away like {damnation.} of three players middle is emperor and two outside are generals. Attacking is sphere of influence one, so generals can only attack the general opposite them until they kill them. emperors cannot attack until one of their generals die. Another important rule is all nonland permanents have "tap: give this permanent to a player on your team one spot away from you." So if the emperor has creatures that want to attack, which you can {donate} them to your general and then he can attack with them. Super fun format. Oh winning is killing opposing emperor.

Since roi is two, the emperor cannot be touched by anything until one of the generals cave. I've got a really nasty white defensive deck that would work so nice in this format. Do prepare for LONG sessions though. (We played years ago with regular decks, friend had a 5th ed. White fortress deck with 4x all CoPs ({circle of protection: White}) for you younglings :p) happened more then once we had to quit after 6 hour sessions (house rule: deck out is reshuffle g/y into library just for this format). Oh the days....

Slight correction on the range of influence:
809.3a: The range of influence is limited to 2 for emperors and 1 for generals. See rule 801, "Limited Range of Influence Option."

Jeez, I just read the emperor thread on the WotC page... Now I want some cheese balls

So can you target the emperor with spells? Or do you have to defeat the generals first

You can probably use spells, just you can't deal damage to them..
Right?  That's what I got from 20 minuets of reading the format

Negative.
801.2.: A player's range of influence is the maximum distance from that player, measured in player seats, that the player can affect. Players within that many seats of the player are within that player's range of influence. Objects controlled by players within a player's range of influence are also within that player's range of influence. Range of influence covers spells, abilities, effects, damage dealing, attacking, making choices, and winning the game.

801.2a The most commonly chosen limited ranges of influence are 1 seat and 2 seats. Different players may have different ranges of influence.
Example: A range of influence of 1 means that only you and the players seated directly next to you are within your range of influence.
Example: A range of influence of 2 means that you and the two players to your left and the two players to your right are within your range of influence.

Oldschoolmtgnoob

So if you're a general seated on the right, and you play {crackling doom}, it will affect the general across from you and the emperor?

griffin131

With a range of 1 it'd only affect the general across from you.

Range isn't across, it has to go in a circle. Like you are at a circular table
For practical reasons we chose to sit opposite in G-E-G vs G-E-G. For game purposes think circular. Your opposing general is the next player on your left or right.
