Bestow argument

So, I'm playing with Bestow for the first time. Can bestow be used as an ability? For example, if I play {Heliod's Emissary} for its cost of 3 plus a plains, can I later pay the 6 plus 1 plains to attach it to another creature? Or does bestow have to be cast out of the hand or you lose the option to use it? Thanks for any help!

Bestow has to be cast. It's not an activated ability so you can't pay up a turn later to enchant another creature with it

Bestow is an option casting cost. If you chose to cast it for the CMC in the top right then it comes in as an Enchantment Creature and can not be bestowed to another creature. If you wish to use it like an Aura/Enchantment it must be cast for the bestow cost but would later become a Creature if the target is removed, dies, is exiled, etc.
