I still don't understand how these are OP  I know they are/were played in Affinity. But I don't get their power.

Because they enter untapped, play just like a basic land but count as a artifact for metalcraft, affinity, ect.

Because they enabled affinity artifacts to snowball in curve, artifact land into a spell bomb, next turn another artifact land into {tooth of chissgoria} for free into free {frogmite}, into {myr enforcer} for two. And these draws WERE common.

My friend made an all artifact deck, best win con was  {Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas}, easy to pull off the ultimate and with all his lands being artifacts the damage is insanely high.

They were also in a block with  {Arcbound Ravager}  {Skullclamp} and  {Disciple of the Vault}

Yeeeeah, standard back then was not very fun :/
