I like {Judge's Familiar} and {Faerie Impostor} if you have some good ETB creatures out.

{Experiment One} is a legitimately good 1-drop evolve creature that sees constructed play. He works with humans, and is great in a blitz deck.

Aside from that, though, evolve is definitely more of a limited format mechanic.

Unless you're running slivers, {Judge's Familiar} is a strictly better 1/1 flyer for 1, and even has hybrid mana to help cast it turn 1 if your deck has white.

I run experiment in my modern deck. 70% of the time he's 4/4 by turn 3.
