If an enchantment is cast and the thing it is targeting is destroyed, are you allowed to choose a new target for the enchantment?

Kaleo42

No. It is placed in the graveyard.

That's what I thought, but some idiot at FNM told me you could choose a new target.

No, not if they are destroying it in response, in that case the enchantments target is out on the stack and would "resolve" after the target is destroyed, which would result in the enchantment fizzling.

So for example, you cast {madcap skills} on {armored transport}, in response I cast {shatter} targeting {armored transport}. It results in {armored transport} and {madcap skills} going to the graveyard due to invalid target. Oh the beauty of instant kill spells!

No. It is placed in the graveyard.

If it's an aura. Should be noted that something like {Oblivion Ring} that has its target become invalid will remain on the battlefield, it just won't be doing anything.

But yeah, you can never change a target after it's been selected on the stack. No givesies-backsies.

Thanks for the distinction, if it's targeting while on the stack then it's not an O-ring, but I shouldve accounted for not everyone knowing that.
