Does anyone ever play ante anymore? I remember this format had you reconsider loading up your deck with money cards... Anyone ever interested in them in the Los Angeles area? I always found these games a little more intense since the competition factor went way up.

Usually to be fair, a player can trade back ante wins or buy back the cards at a set price before the game is started, that way less butt hurtage. Unless you're a total dick when you win.

I would be careful with ante, because in some states this is considered gambling and is actually illegal.  I would be sure to check your local and state laws regarding this before getting too excited. Just my 2 cents.

I would love to read a formal charge from the government against someone for "illegal gambling" with magic the gathering.

It reminds me of the POG controversy in the 90s. Kids couldn't play pogs anymore due to losing issues. Crying over lost milk caps!

It should be noted too that the original tradition of magic had this as standard play.

I miss ante. In a way, it leveled the playing field. If you wanted to play with a {black lotus}, you'd risk losing it to an ante card. That's a pretty big risk considering its value. Enough of a risk to make players think twice about using them. Meanwhile noobs running alot of commons and uncommons have the odds stacked against them but the possible reward of winning was always a great incentive.

Also, any seasoned veterans playing high octane cards have added bragging rights for taking the risk regardless.

My friends and i always called this type of game a "pink slip" game. Idk why but we'd all put together crap decks and whoever won just got a bunch of crappy decks. It's a really exciting style of play.
