What happens to +1/+1 counters placed on lands that have become creatures when they cease to be creatures?

They keep the counters since they don't change zones.

The reason I ask is that I have heard arguments for them "falling off" and for them staying on and was unsure.

Counters stay on.  Auras go to the graveyard.  Equipment falls off.

If I am not wrong (unless stated otherwise), equips and auras check the state of the permanent. Counters, like markers, stay on the permanent - maybe like tattoos. Lol.
