The deck seems good how u have it. Maybe more ways to protect yourself from what other people will tutor. Also I still vote for the rat combo. Play three lands play general. Tutor up thrumming stone and play a rat. Tutor up a land and play thrumming stone. The play out your whole deck with stone and attack with the one you played killing someone.

Nope, only combat damage counts towards the 21 commander damage.

In addition, Malaren causes loss of life, which is technically not damage being dealt at all!

True, it would trigger  {Bloodchief Ascension} tho which is nice with  {Mindcrank} and then simply play  {Syphon Soul}
