Guy attacks me, with enough to kill me even if I block, after creatures all die I gain life from the 2 blood artists I had + enough damage to kill him

He wins, artists ability is triggered, state is checked before anything resolves, and losing is state based. Artists don't do the damage to him and you don't gain the life before you would die to life=0. I could be wrong but that's what I understand it as

You are 100% correct. Happened to me in a draft once when an {army of the damned} and {falconrath noble} attacked into my 4 {rage throwers} ({cackling counterpart} shenanigans). The two of us were both equally confused, but fortunately a L1 judge was there to sort it out for us, and explain it all.

Stupidest way ive ever won - survived combat damage by 2, and rage throwers end up on top of the stack above the noble as the defending player.

Wow. Just imagine that scenario.
4 ghost busters being overun by a zombie horde led by a master vampire. As each one falls the other sets off their fallen comrads gas tank causing devesation explotions. As the last man falls he sets of his own taking the last of them with him.
