So if a creature with trample were to attack and a creature wih protection from it were to block with less toughness than the attacker's power, what happens to the trample damage? Should it not be nullified since an attacking creature's combat damage is reduced to 0 becauseof the protection?

Gorzo

The attacking creature will have to assign damage equal to the blocking creature's toughness, and the rest will trample. After the damage is assigned, the protection will take effect and prevent the damage dealt to the blocking creature with protection, but the remaining trample will still go through.

Theres a perfect example in rule 702.18b. 6/6 green with trample block by a 2/2 with pro green. The 6/6 must assign at least 2 to the 2/2
