If I attack with a 4/4 first strike, and my opponent bloks with two 2/2 non-first strike creatures, I can assign 2 points of first strike damage to both creatures and kill them simultaneously before my creature takes damage?

I believe I am right but my buddy said I couldn't last night. He said I could only assign first strike damage to one creature and the other creature's damage would hit me.

Your first strike creature would deal damage to all non first strike blockers, divided as you choose. Then, any surviving blockers (in this situation, none) would deal damage to your creature. You were right about this one.

Pretty much, but this ruling was modified a bit in M10.

When multiple blockers are assigned to an attacker, the attacking player decides the Damage assignment order.  Basically, you put all blockers in an order and when combat damage time comes, the attacker needs to assign at least lethal damage to the first blocker before assigning more to the next creature in line.  Think of it like a type of trample.

So in your example, you would put one 2/2 in front of the other 2/2.  Then when first strike damage happens, you have to assign at least 2 damage to the first, then you can assign the next 2 damage to the next 2/2.  Both of their guys die before regular damage step.

tl;dr Yes, you can.

Thanks guys. Got it now. I had this problem a while back at a release too. But now I know! 🔨

Also, what does "tl;dr" mean?
