The way it is worded is actually the most elegant way to convey the ability. If it was;

"If a source would deal damage to you or a permanent you control, prevent half (rounded up) of that damage."

The syntax is correct but it just reads off. There are many ways to state what the ability does, but frankly, the card has it the best. Thus, the wording on the card and all cards like it (12).
