What Rares or Mythics should I be on the lookout for?

I've only been playing the game for about six months now. So I was wondering, what kinds of mythics or rares should I be looking out for, be it in packs, from online stores, card shops etc. I wanna be able to build a few good modern or legacy, even extended if I must.

Also, how should I go about teaching my one friend ( who politely asked that her name be withheld) the game. We've been meeting for a few weeks on weekends and she has most if not all the basics down and I wanna start teaching her more advanced techniques.

Lol this is a hard one. I would say it all depends I your play style. I would hate to tell you to look for burn stuff if you like to controll the game. It's really what you like I would say look at the decks in the format you play. Choose the decks you like and build something similar. And before you make any trades check the prices of your cards.

Good rares are usually determined by effect vs mana cost. You can have really powerful rares, but if they have a CMC of 7 or so, they won't be very valuable at all and therefore just as cheap as some commons.

GOod examples being things like {Balefire Dragon} versus {Snapcaster Mage}.

LOL  No, we're all too excited about rares.

My suggestion would be to look into a Duel Deck pack.  It has two decks designed to be played against one another so they are fairly balanced.  They are also good value too!  Start by looking at the latest core set, Magic 2012 or M12.  The cards are designed as staple cards and as a good intro before getting into some of the crazy stuff going on in expansion sets (Dark Ascension, Innistrad).

Try playing a game with a deck with the majority of the more advanced mechanics, like counterspells, hexproof with {Phantasmal Image} or {Phyrexian Metamorph}, and how she can sac in response to blockers with a card like {Alter's Reap} and, as long as the attacker doesn't have trample, she doesn't take any damage

Agreed, but don't go at it gangbusters. Remember, you want them to have fun as well! 😏

I tend to use a "booster battle pack" to teach the basics with the mini decks, then pull the boosters and play a booster fight for fun, then play with a duel deck, then play with one of my actual decks. Its a nice crawl/walk/run method.

Duel of the Planeswalkers 2012 is Magic light. Give you a preconstructed deck with a play style and theme, let's you fool around and figure out the type of player you are, and everything at your own pace.

Problem is most of those cards are out Of standard.
