I kind of assumed this was the whole point of {signal the clans}, but I'll ask anyways, because the verbiage sort of falls short of a full explanation, I felt.  If I grab three of the same named creature, do I keep all three instead of choosing at one random?

No if you take creatures with the same name, you don't get any.
