So the question of cmc check was brought up with {genesis hydra }and the{ edelon of great revels}. So I know tha usually X is counted as 0 when revealed with like inquisition etc. But if it's ring casted with X being 3 will the revels still trigger or is the cmc considered 5?

Pleeb

The value of x on the stack is the chosen value (in this case 3). The cmc of the hydra while on the stack will be 5 and the eidolon is looking at the spells being cast, which means on the stack. It shouldn't trigger the eidolon.

Actually, it would trigger the Eidolon. The CMC is 2 as it's being cast. It's not 5 until it's on the stack.

If the spell has a variable cost that will be paid as it's being cast (such as an  in its mana cost; see rule 107.3), the player announces the value of that variable.

107.3a If a spell or activated ability has a mana cost, alternative cost, additional cost, and/or activation cost with an , [-X], or X in it, and the value of X isn't defined by the text of that spell or ability, the controller of that spell or ability chooses and announces the value of X as part of casting the spell or activating the ability. (See rule 601, "Casting Spells.") While a spell is on the stack, any X in its mana cost equals the announced value. While an activated ability is on the stack, any X in its activation cost equals the announced value.

Right, but the CMC isn't affected until the spell is on the stack. The Eidolon triggers upon casting, not the spell hitting the stack.

Remillo

The first part of Casting a spell is moving it from where it is, to the stack.  Through the whole process of casting the spell, from selecting modes, targets, calculating and paying the costs, the card (or copy) is on the stack.  Things like Eidolon of the Great Revel and {Chalice of the Void} can only trigger once the casting process is complete, where X is already defined.  A {Sphinx's Revelation} cast for anything with X being greater than 0 wont trigger Eidolon, since its converted mana cost is 4 or greater.

please be careful answering rules questions when you are not totally sure. check some rulings and you will see this is not correct. people post here because they believe they will get sound answers backed by specific rulings. feel free to take part in answering rules questions, just make sure you cite your rulings with the rulebook, or at the very least read the rulings that are relevant to the question before answering.

I know this. And I believed that I was totally sure, as I'd recently had this happen to me and told by most of the LGS I was at that this was the way it went down.
