Does a creature become monstrous when it reaches it's amount of monstrosity +1/+1 counters? Or only when you activate the ability?

Ex. Play {Nessian Asp} with monstrous of 4
If it were to gain 4 +1/+1 counters from somewhere else, would it become monstrous? Or does it only become monstrous upon activated its ability?

Giggle the Draco Genius

+1/+1 counters are completely separate from monstrosity as it is possible to become monstrous without adding any counters
e.g., {Polukranos, world eater}

so you must use the ability for it to become monstrous.

Ok thanks. Kinda thought of it like Unleash, doesn't matter how the counters got there, but it would become monstrous. Thanks for correction!

I think you misunderstood. Yes, with Unleash, if you put counters in some other way, it becomes unleashed. But with monstrous, you MUST activate the ability for it to become monstrous. {Stormbreath Dragon} doesn't become monstrous simply because it has 3 +1/+1 counters on it. You still have to activate the ability.

That's what was acknowledged in his reply.

You're right. I misread. So much for typing before coffee.
