Does anyone know of alternatives to {flaring pain} that is both modern legal and common? I have a pauper deck that i want to run in an upcoming 'modern pauper' tournament and I'm having trouble finding a suitable way to combat fog decks.

I'm afraid I have come to the same conclusion    {skullcrack} is uncommon. And {leyline of punishment} is rare, plus it's not life gain that I'm trying to prevent. It's damage prevention that I want to prevent, if that makes sense :S
