I had a curse of deaths hold on my brother which had a strangleroot geist, we Played it as it coming back numerous times until I players massacre wurm. Is that a instant death for him?

I don't think it would bring him back numerous times. Undying says it can't come back it has a counter on it, where as Deaths Hold doesn't put counters on creatures, it just changes the P/T.

However, the Wurm would insta kill the root with the effects of the curse in play.

Right the +1/+1 counter is still on the creature after it came back. It's just the original p/t is reduced be the curse.
