This came up during a game I was playing with a friend. If a spell is countered, does it still count as being cast at all? He had out a  {Guttersnipe} which deals damage when certain spells are cast. I countered a spell with a {Negate}. Does Guttersnipe still deal damage? I guess the question could be reduced to: is a spell considered "cast" as soon as it leaves the players hand, or does it need to resolve?

If a spell or summon is countered, the countered spell doesn't take effect. Thus the whole point of a counter spell.

If a permanent is countered, it goes to the graveyard.
If a temporary card (like an instant or sorcery) is countered, it goes to the graveyard without resolving, meaning the countered spell doesn't take effect.

Yep Gutty still deals 2. This rule also applies to {Door of Destinies} and the Heroic ability.

Hope this helps :D

A spell is still cast if you pay the mana for it, even when it's countered. It just doesn't resolve if it gets countered, but all effects when cast still occur such as guttersnipes eff.

Although true the spell is still cast therefore Gutty deals damage.

You're correct with whenever X enters the battlefield Y happens like  {Purphoros, God of the Forge} and say I cast my {Legion Loyalist} it has to hit the battlefield. So if you {Essence Scatter} my Loyalist doesn't hit the battlefield therefore Purphoros' ability doesn't trigger and no damage is dealt.

You cant counter something that hasnt been cast yet. All abilities are written as cause and effect and if guttersnipe needed a spell to resolve he would say so, but he only needs the card to be cast.
