Not to be confused with the {Path to Exile} we all know and love :P

So I learned the other day that a company called Grinding Gear Games created a Diablo-type game. They did it because Blizzard sucks (a lot) and because Diablo III was was a huge disappointment for many long-time Diablo II players like myself.

So Path of Exile was born. It features Diablo II style gameplay, with a massive, interlocking passive skill tree that connects between all classes. Active skills work like Final Fantasy VII's Materia system. Many of the annoying issues from diablo games have been changed and fixed here, it seems.

The game is free to download and free to play. It's still in open beta. Unlike blizzard, they appear to actually frequently update and maintain the game and servers. It's refreshing.

If anyone was a big diablo II nut like was, I recommend you check it out. Friend me (Gorzo_The_Summoner) and we'll play some time!

+1 for POE. Loaded it and tried it for the first time yesterday, it's just awesome, and free, I keep feeling like there's a catch somewhere.

Yeah, I'm really addicted. The devs and mods are great, and they are frequently updating with bug fixes and content updates. It's like the actually care about the game, imagine that!

The only downsides I've noticed so far are:

1: global chat is full of trolls. Expected of a free mmo, but still, it can be pretty bad. I turn it off pretty often.

2: merciless difficulty is aptly named. Holy crap does this game get difficult. I die a lot.

And 3: your first character will most likely end up being a waste. Without knowing what's important in the late game, your skill tree choices will likely lead you to a build that's awesome in the beginning but can't survive in merciless.
