Ok this may seem a bit of a dumb question, but just how does this on work? I get the intial three mana would allow me to equip this in a normal fashion, but what is the deal with the second sentence/ability?

You pay {3} to place it on the battlefield, and once it's on the field, you can pay {3} to equip it to a creature you control. "Equip only as a sorcery" means you can only equip it to something at any time you could play a sorcery. This means it must be your turn, when the stack is empty.
