Hey guys I have a question about death grasp. Do you have to deal the damage to gain the life or are both independent of each other?

NyghtHawk

You have to have a valid target to cast the card to begin with, so not independent.

Keyeto

They are independent. If the damage is prevented, it won't stop you from gaining the life.

That is true, what I was referring to was that you cant cast it just for the life gain without dealing the damage or targeting to deal it I should say. In that regard is what I meant by it not being independent. Sorry if that was confusing.

It's all good, you were correct. I just wasn't entirely sure the specifics of the question, and wanted to make sure it was all covered.
