So it's come out that this bizarre combo actually does work, and I thought I would share it with you all.

{Civilized Scholar} + {Illusionist's Bracers}.

Here's what happens. You equip the scholar. (Duh.) You activate his ability and copy it, so two copies are on the stack. Copy 1 resolves. If you discard a creature, he transforms and untaps - you want this. Copy 2 then resolves. If you discard a creature again, it transforms again, BACK into Civilized Scholar, allowing you to repeat this process as many times as you have creatures to discard!

"How can that be?" You might be asking. Once Civilized Scholar transforms, he becomes {Homicidal Brute}, so how can the 2nd copy of the ability that says "transform Civilized Scholar" affect him? This quirky interaction is thanks to the special properties of double-faced cards. It is still considered the same entity/card. In addition, when a card states its own name, it translates to "this card." So...since the ability says "transform this card" and homicidal brute is the same card that made and controls the ability... It does indeed work! Crazy, huh?

Can I name this combo? Dr. Jeckels skitzofrinic delusion

This seems like it would go well in an all creature {laboratory maniac} deck

How do you ensure you have creatures?

you could use it in a all creature deck. Or put it in a deck with mostly creatures. Or creatures that return from your graveyard to your hand

Iandtormentor

Dumb me thought it said "Discard a card at random". Serves me right for not reading!
This is perfect for my splinterfright deck!
