{dearly departed}, we are gathered here today...just kidding

If a human wouldn't come into play with a +1/+1 counter, would it get one if {dearly departed} is in the graveyard?

'Additional' implies that one is already there.

Wally

Additional in this case is to clarify if there was already one there it gets another.
For example if there was multiple  {Dearly Departed} in the graveyard you get multiple counters rather than just one.

adventus

Ok.  Humm...I don't like the wording on this card...

MisterJH

No, "additional" means one more than would initially be placed. If a human would enter with 0 +1/+1 counters, 1 more would equal 1 counter, hence "additional."

I thought this. But wanted to clarify before using it against my friend, because we had a big heated argument while playing a game in the Barnes and noble cafe about whether you could populate when there's no tokens on the board. There were people around us too. Lol. In the end, I convinced him it only copies tokens

MisterJH

You convinced him right, i think he was just desperate to get a token... If there arent any tokens, how do you populate? Do you just get to determine the type of token? It could just as easily be a 99/99 as a 1/1 how did he argue this case?

Birdbrain

To put it in perspective. He attacked with {way faring temlple} and dropped another populate card. He just argued that it says it puts a token into play. And just disagreed with everything I said untill I read the populate mechanic word for word the second time. To be fair though, he has picked up pretty easily on the rest of the game. This one mechanic just confused him

MisterJH

XD i wish populate worked like that. "I populate a billion/billion untargetable flying trampling monster of doom. It just say put in a token. I get to choose."

Birdbrain

I wouldn't have gotten him that deck if it had. I was getting it for myself, but he had expressed he wanted to try white in the past, decided to get that for him. Then when he could pay me back, he bought me the fiery dawn deck.
