When a creature is declared a blocker and then said creature is tapped or removed by {unsummon} or another instant, is the attacking creature still considered blocked or will damage still go through? Also if {ashmouth hound} is blocked and the blockers are killed by his damage, will he still damage a player? The resolution of cards on the stack is throwing my brother off...jakeywakey

The creature is still considered blocked.  Even though the blocker may be tapped, it will still deal combat damage.  (you might be thinking of the olden days of Magic. ;) )  Now, an attacker with trample only needs to assign enough damage to the blocker to kill it.  Since it's not in combat anymore, the trampler can assign 0 damage to the ex-blocker and the rest to the player.

As soon as the hound is blocked, it's ability will go on the stack before the rest of combat carries on.  If the 1 damage kills the blocker, ashmouth (what a bad name!) is still blocked.  See above.

Wait now I'm confused... Say I attack with some creature, they declare a blocker and I tap it down with {gideon's lawkeeper}. Is my attacker still blocked?

Yup

Edit:  the trick is to tap their guys BEFORE they block.

O okay now it makes more sense. I'm more used to hearing about tapping when an oppenent is declaring attackers

That's right the exact steps are:
Declare attack step
-fast effects
Declare Attackers
-fast effects
Declare Blockers
-fast effects
Assign combat damage
Fast effects
End combat

That's a good summary

It helps me trying to get back and understand all the ins and outs that have changed since 3rd edition

Hehe almost would like a rule of the day post from you

BlackJester

LOL

The scary thing is that I've seriously considered this. But I wouldn't want to deprive anyone the fun of going through the basic rules. ;)

Well the way I play is if I don't know make them up and sound confidant. So my rules stand until proven wrong.
