I think the deal with expensive cards, is that you get something for nothing. Like Jace has a free brainstorm and that's part of why he is so OP. {ancestral recall} is 3 for 1. Black lotus is also 3 for 0 or 1 card. The value of acceleration in extended or legacy is what leads to the insane card prices. Also scarcity.
