Level up creatures

Are creatures like {Guul Draz Assassin} level 1 when they come into play?  I know this is a n00b question but indulge me please :p

They don't have a level when you first cast them. They advance to lv1 when you give them their first level counter.

So it has no toughness or attack til u level it.....can it block? Can an opponent kill it with a DD spell at level 0?

At lv0 it's just the creature you cast. Take {Student of Warfare} for example. When you cast her she is a 1/1, level her up twice and she is now at lv2 making her a 3/3 first strike. Then when she reaches lv7 she is a 4/4 double strike.

As many times as you can pay. Theres no limit, just only at sorcery speed.
