Casual / HulkFlash!
April 05, 2013, 08:14:46 PM
I miss the Flash/Hulk combo in Legacy so to reminisce I post this old decklist!

FlashHulk or HulkFlash or thank goodness this is casual cause this deck is soooo Banned:

4 {Flash}
4 {Protean Hulk}
4 {Virulent Sliver}
2 {Heart Sliver}
1 {Winged Sliver}
4 {Brainstorm}
4 {Mystical Tutor}
1 {Imperial Seal}
1 {Vampiric Tutor}
1 {Demonic Tutor}
4 {Summoner's Pact}
4 {Pact of Negation}
4 {Force of Will}
3 {Simian Spirit Guide}
3 {Elvish Spirit Guide}
4 {Lotus Petal}
4 {Polluted Delta}
2 {Flooded Strand}
4 {Underground Sea}
1 {Tropical Island}
1 {Island}

Turn 1; play Blue mana producer get second mana from a Spirit Guide or Petal, Flash the Protean Hulk into play, he dies, go get 4 Virulent Sliver and 1 Heart Sliver to attack, Poison FTW (yes Poison stacks)!

I like the singleton of Winged Sliver just in case you miss the first turn win and they get some resistance on the board, this way you can FlashHulk during their turn and get the Winged Sliver for evasion instead of the Heart Sliver.

For those that have never seen this combo before, a Turn 0 Win (like before your opponent plays a land during the first upkeep while you are on the draw) can be done with {Gemstone Caverns} + a Spirit Guide + Hulk/Flash to get {Disciple of the Vault} or {Blood Artist} and a few 0 or X cost (that can be played as 0 just to die) Artifact Creatures like {Phyrexian Marauder} or {Shifting Wall}.

I prefer the Hasty Poisonous Sliver win though, more consistent of a deck.

Here is the other decklist for posterity sake:

4 {Flash}
4 {Protean Hulk}
4 {Disciple of the Vault}
4 {Shifting Wall}
4 {Phyrexian Marauder}
4 {Force of Will}
4 {Pact of Negation}
4 {Summoner's Pact}
4 {Mystical Tutor}
4 {Brainstorm}
4 {Simian Spirit Guide}
4 {Elvish Spirit Guide}
4 {Lotus Petal}
4 {Gemstone Caverns}
4 {Island}

HulkFlash dominated legacy for a bit before the banning of Flash. I use it in casual play only when someone mentions they have a deck that has never lost. My normal playgroup has banned it from play.

Flash Hulk:

4 {Flash}
4 {Protean Hulk}
4 {Disciple of the Vault}
4 {Shifting Wall}
4 {Phyrexian Marauder}
4 {Force of Will}
4 {Pact of Negation}
4 {Summoner's Pact}
4 {Mystical Tutor}
4 {Brainstorm}
4 {Simian Spirit Guide}
4 {Elvish Spirit Guide}
4 {Lotus Petal}
4 {Gemstone Caverns}
4 {Island}

Dominated legacy for a bit before the banning of Flash. I use it in casual only when someone mentions they have a deck that has never lost. My normal playgroup has banned it from play.

I also like the version of Flash/Hulk that uses 1x {Heart Sliver} and 4x {Virulent Sliver} as its win condition (rather than all the 0 cost artifacts, because it is a more stable build) but that is just a turn 1 win not a turn 0 win.

Perfect Flash/Hulk hand for turn 0 (before opponents first main phase) win:

Gemstone Caverns
Simian Spirit Guide
Flash
Protean Hulk
Force of Will or Pact of Negation
Pact of Negation
Any card, I will go with Summoner's Pact

Play Caverns. Pitch Summoner's Pact to Caverns. Exile SSG. Tap Caverns for U, use U and R to play Flash, put Protean Hulk into play. Protean Hulk triggers and is then sacrificed due to Flash. Search for 4 Disciple of the Vault then Search for 4 of each Phyrexian Marauder, and Shifting Wall.  As each 0/0 artifact enters play then dies your 4 Disciples collectively make the opponent lose 32 life.

Another fun turn 1 win (this one has been mentioned before, but this one is a bit different):

Mountain
Simian Spirit Guide
Simian Spirit Guide
Elvish Spirit Guide
Elvish Spirit Guide
Channel
Fireball

Here's another one:

{Vampire Hexmage} + {Dark Depths} + {Lightning Greaves} with Forest, Swamp, Fastbond and Black Lotus also in the starting hand.

Play then tap {Forest}, play {Fastbond}, play {Dark Depths}, play {Swamp}, play {Black Lotus} sac Lotus for 3 Black and tap Swamp to play {Vampire Hexmage} and {Lightning Greaves}. Sac Hexmage to get Marrit Lage into play attach Lightning Greaves to Lage...attack! I call this perfect hand combo: Sacin' the Sexmage FTW!

I've got more, but for now I will let everyone digest these.

Legacy / Re: Legacy meta discussion

I agree. I only play Legacy but at multiple locations in multiple states and the meta is always different. I usually run Burn, or a version of countertop based on how much aggro/control/combo i see at a meta. Legacy has such a wide variety of decks that can do well; Maverick, Merfolk, Elves, Burn, CounterTop variants, Threshold variants, Reanimator, Bant, ANT, Affinity, DeathNTaxes, Goblins, MUC, Painter, SneakShow, Dredge, etc, etc...

Casual / Re: Lifegain

After using Ajani's deck on dotp13, I too was playing around with a Legacy legal but casual Lifegain deck  Here is what I came up with:

1 {Beacon of Immortality}
2 {Test of Endurance}
3 {Oblivion Ring}
4 {Swords to Plowshares}
4 {Worthy Cause}
2 {Felidar Sovereign}
4 {Serra Ascendant}
4 {Ajani's Pridemate}
4 {Soul Warden}
4 {Knight of Meadowgrain}
4 {Nomads en-Kor}
4 {Task Force}
1 {Miren, The Moaning Well}
3 {Emeria, the Sky Ruin}
16 Plains

I also somehow want to fit these cards in:

4 {Soul's Attendant}
1 {Serra Avatar}
1 {Animal Boneyard}

Infinite Life with en-kor + Task Mage + Worthy Cause is amazing.  Add Red with {Fling} / {About Face} and you have infinite damage too, but this deck is all about lifegain.

Here is a nice article about the fetch lands thinning the deck:

http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/print.asp?ID=3096

Currently in the meta I play in fetches are no good (Control/Combo meta, I need to be fast, and I have to be mindful of {Stifle}). If I played with Grim Lavamancer in an aggro meta absolutely I would be running fetches. I prefer the Onslaught ones myself {Bloodstained Mire} and {Wooded Foothills}

Can we move on to the rest of the deck? The only slot I am currently testing is the 1x Reverberate, I could easily add a singleton of {Incinerate} or {Shard Volley} but being able to Reverberate a Fireblast FTW, or reverberate a counter to let my burn through is just too fun to pass up.

I'm also seriously considering {Runeflare Trap} to the board, but it is extremely situational.

Speed is invaluable right now, and this deck goldfishs turn 4 all day long.

This.

The deck only runs 18 lands.  I play Legacy every Saturday. I have top 8ed every legacy event I have played in with this deck since 2010 (and on many of those occasions I played Grim Lavamancer + fetchs, especially before Vexing Devil).

Fetch lands + {Grim Lavamancer} + {Searing Blaze} is an option in a creature filled meta. I'm currently dealing with lots of combo/control in my meta. Speed is invaluable right now, and this deck goldfishs turn 4 all day long.
