Can I target a planeswalker with a "target player gains (insert number here) life" and if so what happens?

If I have two copies of {hostility} on the battlefield do I put two elemental shaman tokens onto the battlefield for each point of damage prevented?

Or how about {palace guard} + {ghostly possession}

I'm stuck trying to figure out a way to get counters on {herald of war} fast in a green white deck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
