Just started playing magic again, last played seriously around alara reborn... Wondering what are the top control style cards are, such as cancel was(counter spell)... I'd prefer you mention stuff from core 13 and the 3 expansions that will still be good after oct 5th... I bought a core 13 box so far... Looking to mainly order singles for the rest...

{Murder} is straight up simple.
The unconditional counters are {Cancel} (I think its in the core set) and {Dissipate} (In Dark Ascension).
There are a couple situational counters like {Negate} (definitely in M13). {Outwit}, {Second Guess}, and such are from Innistrad block but they really are situational.
Lots of the cost-effective controls, ie: {Mana Leak}, {Doom Blade}, etc. did not get reprinted in this core set.
Cancel is out in October as well. They reprinted {Rewind} instead.
